Do You Remember Your First Time?

Remember your first time? Doing that thing? You know, the thing that totally changed your life for the better. It brought you immense joy and amazing astonishment?

Bear with me now…

The day after my father passed away, I had a flight lesson. My flight instructor asked if I really wanted to fly, and I replied yes, but I just want to go up and watch the houses get small… and that is exactly what we did.  Jumped in an airplane and just enjoyed the view.

As a flight instructor, whenever my students would get overloaded, over-stressed, or just fatigued with the constant stress of flight lessons and school, I would toss out the plan for the day and say, “we’re going to go up and watch the houses get smaller today..” It got a few funny looks initially, but after a while, I think they got it. Just get in a plane, and have a good time. Fly where you want, however you want. Go up and down. Turn with a slightly steeper bank than normal. Forget about what was stressing them out and enjoy the view.

Today, I had one of those days. Lots of stressors at home and I needed a place to clear my mind and just look at the view…

I don’t have access to an airplane to watch the houses get smaller, but I do have access to something else that brings a smile to my face… as well as many other faces…some single track and a bike.

And what a glorious ride it was! Autumn is here. The leaves are falling and I was riding over a colorful combination of dirt, leaves, and fallen branches (which I would stop to pick up if they were substantial).

When I was done, I thought to myself, “self, that was a wonderful trip watching the houses get smaller…” Then I laughed at how absurd that sounds after riding a bike, but it made perfect sense to me.

So, do you remember your first time? Doing that thing? You know, the thing that totally changed your life for the better. It brought you immense joy and amazing astonishment?

Fortunately I do, and it is nice, every once in a while, to go back there and forget about the grown up things and be a kid again.

Have a wonderful day!
